Grandmother Matilda's Mount Morris

We received this lovely photograph from Olin Hartley in Texas. It's a Henry Fox, possibly the Henry Fox in his database which would be the Henry Fox born 4 APRIL 1803 (Greene County) and who died the 20th of October 1881; the Henry Fox who married Susannah Dulaney.

Olin's family includes a first cousin named Edward Allen Hartley (1913-1999) who married Thelma Marie Fox (1915-2001). They lived up Little Shannon Run outside of Mount Morris. Edward and Thelma's sons still own the farm and Olin's in touch with them.

To the names on papers either seized by the Confederates or AS confederate papers, those of Fox and Calvert, we can add Dulaney. So much of our West Virginia and Pennsylvania research feels like pussy-footing around the Civil War only to just barely discover how the elements of the warring effected people personally.

We have to keep reminding ourselves that 1860 was the eve of the war proper, but the elements heating up to spark the eve had been building and building. The architecture of the war is much more complicated than slapping a few logs together to make some shelter.

And after the War the consequences of a people, yet again, pounding differences out in actions of brutality brought distinct regional distinctions to our country. These are evident in particular finances and the general mending up of economy with horrific gashes in it. Socially, America was more Frankenstein-like than a whistling patriotic tunes cartoon picture. Legislation did not instill fondness, nor religion decency. Many of the moral dilemmas which had so violently clashed with permissions to use guns against neighbors were pulled forth into the next decade like tattered flags and half burnt consistories.

At best families disguised modern political party tethers in some older heritage. And there were those who never did speak to so-and-so again and/or would NOT belong to the same kind of church as those people. People were trying to figure out how to go on. And many did not stay in the conflagration that was the Pennsylvania/West Virginia area--only passed through changing their names to reflect difference from and hope for.
